The Department of Physical Therapy Education at WesternU College of Health Sciences held its yearly Pediatric and Neuro Wheelchair and Assistive Technology Extravaganza on April 17, 2026. The event brought together students, faculty, clinicians, and community members to explore the latest innovations in mobility and assistive devices.
Attendees had the chance to test drive various wheelchairs, adaptive seating systems, and communication aids. Physical therapy students worked alongside experienced clinicians to learn how to properly fit and adjust equipment for patients with neurological conditions and pediatric needs. The expo also featured hands-on demonstrations of high-tech tools, including voice-activated controls and custom joystick systems.
Organizers said the goal was to bridge the gap between classroom theory and real-world application. By interacting directly with vendors and users, students gained practical skills in assessing patient needs and recommending appropriate technology. The event also highlighted the importance of accessibility and independence for people with disabilities.
Community members praised the opportunity to see new devices up close and ask questions. Many left with resources and referrals for further support. The department plans to host the event again next year, aiming to expand vendor participation and offer more workshops on adaptive technology.
