The United States has escalated its trade and security conflict with China, as the nation's top telecommunications regulator voted unanimously to ban the import and sale of a wide range of Chinese-made electronics. The decision, announced late Tuesday, targets smartphones, digital cameras, and personal computers originating from several major Chinese manufacturers.
The Federal Communications Commission cited "unacceptable national security risks," claiming these devices could be used for espionage or to disrupt critical infrastructure. The vote effectively bars the sale of new devices from companies like Huawei and ZTE, extending previous restrictions that focused on telecom network equipment. The ban covers hardware that connects to US networks, including laptops and tablets.
Industry analysts warn the move will disrupt supply chains and raise prices for American consumers, as many popular electronics are assembled in China. The action is the most aggressive step yet in Washington's ongoing effort to limit the reach of Chinese technology. The new rules are expected to take effect within 60 days, giving retailers time to clear existing inventory.
