Ukrainian forces reportedly carried out a coordinated attack on key Russian military-industrial targets overnight on May 8, hitting an oil refinery and a branch of a defense technology center, according to Russian Telegram media channels.
The strikes targeted facilities deep inside Russian territory, marking another escalation in Ukraine's campaign to disrupt Moscow's energy and defense infrastructure. Local sources in Russia's Krasnodar Krai region reported explosions near the Ilsky oil refinery, which processes crude oil for fuel supplies. Separately, a facility linked to a defense technology research center was also struck, though the extent of the damage remains unclear.
Russian officials have not yet issued an official statement, but independent monitors confirmed drone activity in the area. The attacks come as Ukraine continues to develop long-range strike capabilities, aiming to degrade Russia's logistical support and industrial base for the war.
This is not the first time Ukraine has targeted Russian oil infrastructure. Previous strikes have hit refineries and fuel depots, causing production slowdowns and forcing Moscow to redirect resources for air defense. The latest operation suggests Kyiv is maintaining pressure on Russia's rear lines, even as fighting intensifies along the front in eastern Ukraine. No casualties have been reported from the overnight raids, but local emergency services were deployed to contain fires at the refinery site.
