Pope Leo XIV released his first encyclical on Thursday, issuing a stark warning about the unchecked rise of artificial intelligence and calling on world leaders to implement strict safeguards. In the document, the pontiff described AI as a "double-edged sword" that could either uplift humanity or deepen existing inequalities and conflicts.
The Pope specifically urged governments and tech companies to "disarm" the technology, arguing that without ethical boundaries, AI systems could be used to manipulate public opinion, automate warfare, and erode human dignity. He referenced concerns over autonomous weapons and surveillance, stating that machines should never be granted the power to make life-or-death decisions.
The encyclical also touched on labor displacement, warning that rapid automation could leave millions without work or purpose. The Pope called for a "human-centered" approach to innovation, where technology serves the common good rather than profit or control.
While the Vatican has previously commented on AI ethics, this marks the first time a pope has devoted an entire encyclical to the subject. The document is expected to influence Catholic leaders and policymakers worldwide, though it does not carry the same doctrinal weight as teachings on faith and morals.
