NASA has chosen fourteen university teams from across the United States as finalists in its prestigious 2026 Revolutionary Aerospace Systems Concepts – Academic Linkage (RASC-AL) competition. This annual event challenges students to develop innovative concepts that could shape the future of space exploration and technology.
The selected teams will now embark on a deep-dive engineering design process, focusing on ambitious themes for NASA's future missions. This year's challenges include designing systems for large-scale lunar surface operations, creating next-generation interplanetary habitats, and developing novel approaches for exploring the moons of Mars, Deimos and Phobos. The competition pushes students to think decades ahead, conceptualizing the infrastructure and vehicles needed for a sustained human presence beyond Earth.
Over the coming months, the finalist teams will refine their proposals with guidance from NASA and industry experts. Their work will culminate in a detailed technical paper and a presentation at the 2026 RASC-AL Forum, where their concepts will be evaluated by a panel of aerospace specialists. This program serves as a critical pipeline for new ideas and future talent, directly linking academic innovation with the agency's long-term strategic goals. The competition not only provides students with real-world experience but also gives NASA access to a fresh perspective on solving the complex challenges of deep space exploration.
