Lawmakers discuss technology in schools and activity funding shortage

CHEYENNE - Students and teachers met with state lawmakers Thursday to share a wide variety of concerns and potential solutions regarding funding for Wyoming's public schools. The discussion covered two main topics: the role of technology in classrooms and a persistent shortage of funding for extracurricular activities.

Several teachers voiced concerns that aging computers and unreliable internet connections are hindering lesson plans. They argued that without consistent investment in hardware and training, students in rural districts fall behind their peers in more connected areas. One educator noted that outdated devices often crash during state testing, creating unnecessary stress for students.

On the other side of the table, lawmakers pressed for data showing a direct link between technology spending and improved test scores. Some questioned whether schools are purchasing devices that go unused or become obsolete too quickly.

The conversation then shifted to activity funding. Coaches and club sponsors described a growing gap between what the state provides and what it actually costs to run sports, music programs, and academic clubs. Many districts now rely on parent fundraising or pay-to-play fees, which can exclude low-income students. One student athlete told the committee that missing a single payment meant losing a spot on the team.

Lawmakers acknowledged the funding strain but did not commit to any specific increases. They asked for more detailed cost breakdowns before the next budget session. The committee plans to continue gathering input from schools across the state over the coming months.
