The San Francisco-based artificial intelligence company announced late Friday that it has blocked foreign nationals from using its Mythos and Fable AI models. The move comes after the federal government issued a direct order to suspend access to the two systems, citing potential risks to national security.
Anthropic did not disclose the specific nature of the government's concerns, but the order effectively prevents non-U.S. citizens from interacting with the advanced language models. The company confirmed that it is now restricting access based on user location and identification, requiring additional verification for anyone attempting to use the tools from outside the United States.
The suspension is expected to impact researchers, developers, and businesses abroad who rely on Mythos and Fable for tasks ranging from content generation to complex data analysis. Anthropic has not provided a timeline for when the restrictions might be lifted, though it noted that it is working with federal authorities to address the security issues.
Industry analysts say this is one of the most aggressive actions taken by the U.S. government regarding civilian AI systems. While export controls on semiconductor technology have been common, directly ordering a company to block foreign users from a software platform is relatively new. The decision raises questions about how the government plans to regulate access to powerful AI models in the future, especially as these tools become more capable and widespread.
Anthropic emphasized that it is complying fully with the order and that the safety of its systems remains a top priority. The company has not commented on whether similar restrictions might apply to its other AI products.
