A Kenyan doctoral researcher at Penn State is using artificial intelligence to predict and prevent mining disasters, with potential implications for the controversial proposed mine near Minnesota's Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Khadija Omar Said, a doctoral researcher, focuses her work on advancing AI and automation to make mining operations safer.
Her research comes at a time when the proposed Twin Metals project near the Boundary Waters has drawn intense debate over environmental risks. The mine, which would extract copper, nickel, and other metals, has faced opposition from conservation groups concerned about potential pollution to the pristine wilderness.
Dean DeBeltz, Twin Metals vice president of external affairs and project operations, has defended the project's safety measures. The company has conducted extensive core sampling and environmental studies.
Said's AI models analyze data from sensors and historical records to identify patterns that could signal impending failures in mining operations. The goal is to give miners early warnings before accidents happen.
The research is still in development, but it highlights how technology could play a role in balancing resource extraction with environmental protection. For now, the proposed mine remains tied up in legal and regulatory battles, while scientists like Said continue working on tools to make mining safer wherever it occurs.
