AI and drone technology boost precision, while lowering crop costs

Agricultural engineering expert Scott Shearer, chair of the Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering at Ohio State University, states that artificial intelligence is rapidly evolving into a fundamental tool for modern farm management. This technological shift is enabling significant gains in precision while simultaneously reducing overall crop production costs.

Shearer acknowledges the current economic climate in agriculture, which may not encourage large-scale investments. However, he notes that many forward-thinking producers are actively integrating these technologies. The synergy of AI and drone platforms is proving transformative. Drones equipped with advanced sensors collect vast amounts of high-resolution field data, from plant health and soil moisture levels to early signs of pest infestation.

Artificial intelligence then processes this data, turning raw imagery into actionable insights. This allows for hyper-localized applications of water, fertilizers, and pesticides—a practice known as variable-rate application. Instead of treating an entire field uniformly, farmers can target specific areas that need attention, minimizing waste and input expenses. This precision directly lowers costs and enhances environmental sustainability by reducing chemical runoff.

The result is a more efficient, data-driven approach to agriculture. Farmers can make timely decisions, potentially increase yields through better crop monitoring, and improve their bottom line by optimizing every input. This technological convergence is paving the way for a new standard in farm management, where strategic data use is key to resilience and profitability.
